Job Summary
We are seeking a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Specialist to lead the design and deployment of QKD-based secure communication systems for our clients. In this role, you will work on establishing quantum-secured communication channels that protect sensitive data against eavesdropping – even by adversaries with quantum computers. You will be responsible for end-to-end QKD projects: from planning network architecture and selecting appropriate QKD technologies, to overseeing implementation, integration with existing encryption systems, and ongoing performance tuning. This role is ideal for someone with a background in quantum physics or optical communications who wants to apply that expertise to real-world cybersecurity solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Architecture & Design: Design end-to-end QKD network architectures tailored to client needs. Determine optimal deployment of QKD links (fiber or free-space), the placement of quantum nodes and repeaters (if needed), and integration points with classical networks and cryptographic systems.
- Technology Evaluation: Evaluate various QKD platforms and vendors. Keep abreast of the latest QKD devices, protocols (such as BB84, E91, etc.), and related hardware (single-photon detectors, entangled photon sources) to select the best fit for each project’s security requirements and budget.
- Deployment & Integration: Lead the installation and configuration of QKD systems. Work closely with client IT/network teams to integrate QKD outputs (secret keys) into their existing encryption infrastructure (for example, feeding QKD-generated keys into VPN appliances, encryption software, or key management systems). Ensure that quantum-derived keys are effectively used to encrypt data channels without disrupting operations.
- Testing & Troubleshooting: Conduct thorough testing of QKD links for key generation rate, error rates, and stability. Monitor for any signs of eavesdropping (using QKD’s built-in detection capabilities) and troubleshoot issues like signal loss or hardware malfunctions. Optimize system parameters to achieve reliable and efficient key distribution.
- Client Training & Handover: Develop training materials and operational guides for clients’ technical staff. Provide hands-on training sessions on how to monitor the QKD system, interpret its alerts, and perform basic maintenance or troubleshooting. Ensure clients feel confident in the day-to-day operation of the system after deployment.
- Documentation: Produce comprehensive documentation for each project, including system designs, configurations, test results, security analysis of the QKD deployment, and maintenance procedures. This documentation will support both internal knowledge retention and client reference.
- R&D and Improvement: Contribute to Secure Quantum’s ongoing research and development in quantum communications. Explore ways to improve QKD integration or to combine QKD with other techniques (like post-quantum algorithms) for enhanced security. Provide feedback and new ideas based on project experiences to continually advance our QKD practice.
Qualifications
- Educational Background: Master’s or Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field. A specialization in quantum optics, quantum information, or photonics is highly relevant.
- Expertise: Strong understanding of Quantum Key Distribution principles and protocols. Familiarity with optical fiber communication and/or free-space optical links, including knowledge of how distance and environment affect quantum signal transmission.
- Hands-On Experience: Practical experience working in a lab or industry setting with quantum communication equipment (single-photon detectors, lasers, optical fibers, beam aligners, etc.) or similar sensitive optical systems. Experience deploying or testing a QKD system is a major plus.
- Networking & Security Knowledge: Good grasp of classical encryption and networking. Understanding how QKD interfaces with traditional cryptographic systems (for instance, how keys are injected into encryption devices, concepts of one-time pad vs. key exchange for AES, etc.). Basic knowledge of networking (OSI layers, network security devices) to collaborate effectively with network engineers.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. Ability to diagnose issues in complex systems that blend hardware, software, and networking. Resourcefulness in finding solutions to technical challenges in the field.
- Communication: Clear and effective communication skills. Ability to explain quantum concepts to non-experts and to produce well-organized technical documentation. Comfortable working directly with clients and managing expectations.
- Travel & Flexibility: Willingness to travel to client sites as needed for installation and support (travel will depend on project locations and could be domestic or international). Flexibility in working hours may be required during critical deployment or testing phases.
What We Offer
- Innovative Work: The chance to work on truly groundbreaking projects deploying quantum technology in real operational networks – a rare and exciting frontier in cybersecurity.
- Expert Team Collaboration: Collaboration with a team of experts in quantum science and cybersecurity, providing a rich environment for knowledge exchange and professional growth.
- Competitive Compensation: A competitive salary, along with benefits including health coverage, retirement plans, and possibly relocation assistance for qualified candidates.
- Cutting-Edge Resources: Access to state-of-the-art equipment and continuous learning opportunities. We support attending relevant conferences or training in quantum communication to stay at the forefront of the field.
- Impact: An opportunity to help clients achieve the highest level of communication security available, protecting critical data against even the most advanced threats.
