At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.
Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.
The workWe are looking for a Quantum Engineer to join our Calibration and Benchmarking team, focusing on improving the performance of superconducting quantum processors.
In this role, you will work hands-on with quantum hardware to develop, optimize, and execute calibration and benchmarking protocols. Your work will directly influence QPU performance by identifying bottlenecks, improving calibration strategies, and providing critical feedback to design, simulation, and fabrication teams.
You will play a key role in validating new QPU architectures and supporting IQM’s roadmap toward high-performance and scalable quantum computing systems.
What you’ll actually do
- Perform calibration and benchmarking on latest-generation QPUs
- Develop and improve calibration protocols and optimization strategies for large scale processors
- Analyze experimental data to identify performance bottlenecks and improvement opportunities
- Perform measurements over iterations of superconducting qubit devices and provide feedback to design, simulation and fabrication teams
- Contribute to system-level optimization, balancing performance and efficiency
- Provide input to development of calibration software and automated QPU tune-up frameworks
- Support delivery processes, including QPU calibration and preparation for deployment
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across hardware, software, and system engineering
What we’re looking for
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Strong understanding of quantum mechanics and quantum computing principles
- Experience with Python programming and data analysis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work with complex experimental data
- Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
Nice to have
- Experimental experience with superconducting qubits and calibration techniques
- Familiarity with optimization algorithms and techniques
- Experience with experimental quantum hardware or calibration workflows
What kind of person will thrive in this role?
- Curious and motivated to improve quantum hardware performance
- Hands-on and comfortable working with experimental systems
- Collaborative and able to communicate across teams
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical thinking
- Ambitious about contributing to large-scale quantum computing systems
Why IQM?
- Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.
- High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.
- Never the smartest: Expect to learn constantly. You won't always be the smartest person in the room, and that's the point.
- Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!
- The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.
- Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.
The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.
