About the Role
We are seeking an Quantum Engineer to support the commissioning, validation, and operation of a state-of-the-art Quantum Communication Infrastructure testing and evaluation facility.
It is a strategic initiative developed by government entities, aimed at strengthening Europe’s cybersecurity capabilities through the integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies into existing communication networks.
As part of the secure communication ecosystem, will provide an additional security layer based on quantum physics principles and will contribute to the future cybersecurity strategy. The terrestrial test and evaluation infrastructure will enable the assessment, validation, and future certification of QKD-based technologies and services.
The successful professional will join a multidisciplinary laboratory team responsible for preparing, commissioning, and operating this advanced quantum communication test facility.
Key Responsibilities
The professional will contribute to the preparation, installation, validation, and operational activities of the terrestrial testing infrastructure.
Main responsibilities include:
Test Facility Preparation & Validation
- Perform preliminary laboratory tests to prepare the facility for operational deployment.
- Validate experimental results by comparing measurements and outcomes with those obtained by the testbed developers.
- Analyse test results and identify potential improvements or inconsistencies.
Installation & Commissioning Support
- Support the installation, configuration, and commissioning of the quantum communication test facility.
- Collaborate with laboratory engineers and technical teams during deployment activities.
- Troubleshoot optical, photonic, and fibre-based communication systems.
Quality Management & Standards Compliance
- Contribute to the development and implementation of an ISO/IEC 17025 quality management system in preparation for laboratory accreditation.
- Work according to strict laboratory procedures, protocols, and documentation requirements.
- Ensure accurate recording of experiments, measurements, and validation activities.
- Prepare regular technical reports and documentation.
Technical Development & Knowledge Sharing
- Maintain knowledge of relevant international standards and best practices in quantum communications, photonics, and cybersecurity.
- Collaborate with internal teams, external contractors, and international partners.
- Support knowledge transfer and operational readiness activities.
Required Qualifications
Education
- University degree corresponding to a minimum Bachelor’s degree of three years.
- Academic background including subjects related to:
- Quantum Physics
- Optics
- Photonics
- Optical Communications
- Fibre-optic technologies
Required Technical Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

- Strong hands-on experimental experience with:
- Optical hardware

- Laboratory measurement equipment
Quantum Communications
- Solid understanding of the fundamental principles of:
- Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)
- Quantum communication concepts
- Quantum physics phenomena applied to secure communications
- Previous practical experience with QKD systems or quantum communication testbeds will be considered a strong asset.
Laboratory & Quality Environment
- Experience working in structured laboratory environments with:
