We are seeking a highly qualified R&D Manager - Ion Technologies for our Broomfield, Colorado location to manage our experimental ion transport and magnetic field calibration testbeds. This role is a player-coach position, with individual technical contribution, technical leadership, and people management in roughly equal parts. As such, successful candidates will possess a broad and deep understanding of ion transport, atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics, and/or quantum computing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish strategic plans for your team, including:
- Technical scope: milestones, inchstones, and key decision points.
- Developing test plans and identifying key handoffs with technical partners.
- Recognizing critical interdependencies with peer groups and adjacent disciplines.
- Own and manage programmatic execution of the above plans, including:
- Tracking and reporting progress against the plan.
- Allocating resources and prioritizing to meet milestones.
- Identifying and managing risks and opportunities.
- Lead a team of experimental scientists pushing the frontier of ion transport methods in surface ion traps.
- Lead a team of experimental scientists and engineers developing new methods for in-situ magnetic field calibration.
- Collaborate with quantum computer system architects and engineers to derive ion transport and magnetic field calibration requirements for current and future systems.
- Guide and perform efforts to conceptualize, develop, simulate, and demonstrate transport and calibration methods to meet these requirements.
- Support experimental transport functionality in current and future commercial quantum computing systems.
- Own the technology portfolio for these technical areas, including IP development and capture, procurement planning, long-term development strategy, and roadmap planning.
- Identify team-level staffing needs and fill key gaps via:
- Mentoring, coaching, and training direct-report engineers and scientists.
- Meeting project objectives by hiring and developing staff with the right skills for success.
- Planning and nurturing career development of direct-report engineers & scientists.
- Performing technical goal setting, employee performance assessments, and compensation adjustments.
YOU MUST HAVE:
- Bachelor’s Degree minimum
- Minimum 8+ years of experience in technical research and development (graduate school inclusive).
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in the development and/or operation of AMO and/or QC systems.
- Minimum 1+ year of experience serving as the leader of an advanced technical team (either task leadership or personnel management, or both).
- Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person. defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status
- Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
WE VALUE:
- Advanced degree—Master’s or PhD—in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 12+ years of experience in a related technical field.
- Direct experience with people management in a technical industry.
- Proven expertise in AMO physics and/or quantum computing.
- 3+ years of industry experience.
- Experience in complex task management (cost, schedule, risk/opportunity, etc.).
- A track record of high-technology (engineering or physical science) development.
- A strong and active network of professional relationships.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation & Benefits:
Incentive Eligible – Range posted is inclusive of bonus target when applicable
The pay range for this role is $180,000 – $225,000 annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate’s skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role.
